Its 25 years since the song enjoyed its original success, but The Pogues’ ‘Fairytale Of New York’ looks set to bag this year’s Christmas number one spot.
The popular hit from The Pogues and Kirsty McColl is arguably the greatest Christmas song ever written. Every man, woman and child will undoubtedly have memories of singing along to the song during happy Christmases past.
Originally reaching No. 2 in the 1987 charts (The Pet Shop Boys kept them off of the top spot), Shane MacGowan and Kirsty McColl’s gritty performance of the haunting ‘Fairytale Of New York’ ensured that it lived on to become the much-loved Christmas song that it is today.
So much so, that 25 years on from its original release and the hit has been given odds of 25/1 to reach the number one spot in time for this Christmas.
The song, which is still as popular as it was in the 80’s, has proven a hit with generation after generation – staying in the Christmas Top 20 Charts every year since 2005.
But just what is it about this reminiscent song and its storyline of quarrelling ex-lovers that made it the beloved Christmas hit that it is today?
Shane MacGowan, singer of The Pogues, had this to say about the song and its success:
“Obviously it is hard for me to say what makes Fairytale so popular…The band played really well and Kirsty did an incredible vocal. I also think a lot of people identify with the main characters being down on their luck and remembering better days and dreams they once had.”
