This year’s “Children in Need” single is to be performed by X Factor judges Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos. Barlow, lead singer of Take That, explains he’s provided the annual charity track a “credible makeover”, by introducing urban current chart acts.
Wretch 32 the current chart headliner with “Don’t Go”, Tinchy Stryder and Chipmunk, all make appearances on the cover of Massive Attack’s Teardrop, a real change from the usual characters chosen to perform the track. It will be introduced to the public just before the BBC TV broadcast on 18th November.
By tradition, the charity single often has a comedy element, but this year they have broken away from the old restraints, and gone for a more meaningful song. Gary Barlow stated he wanted to create interest for a widely ranged audience, including the youth culture. He felt by introducing grime and commercial music artists that this year’s entry will benefit.
Massive Attack’s version of Teardrops, the original, has been sampled and the song lyrics recreated by Wretch 32 and others so that they’re more current.
Fellow X Factor judge and member of N Dubz, Tulisa, told DJ Fearne Cotton, who presents on Radio 1, that it was fun to work with old faces she already knew. She provided the statement: “It’s nice to be back with the grime crew, the urban family.” Tulisa added “The Track itself is really but current and I think it’s going to work.”
